Everlasting Life
Everlasting life means life without end. There
are many words that have the same meaning as everlasting,
such as eternal, evermore, and forever.
There are those who believe and teach that one does not have everlasting life
until the resurrection. According to their teaching, there is no life between
death and resurrection. If this is true, everlasting does
not mean everlasting!
The Bible, God’s Word, teaches that eternal life is a free gift from
God through Jesus Christ the Lord (Romans 6:23). The moment one believes and
receives Christ as Savior, that person receives everlasting life in the here
and now! The believer has eternal life and is already in possession of it
(John 3:16). He that believes on the Son has everlasting life (John 3:36;
5:24). “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life,
and this life is in His Son” (I John 5:11).
Every believer has been called and set apart by God the Father and preserved
in Christ Jesus (Jude 1:1). The word preserved means to protect,
to keep from harm. The believer is kept by the power of God (I Peter 1:5).
We read in John’s gospel that the Lord Jesus said, “I give unto
them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck
them out of My hand” (John 10:28).
Salvation is available to all mankind, but not all will avail themselves of
the great salvation that God has provided in and through Jesus Christ (Titus
2:11; Acts 2:21; John 3:36). What about the unbeliever? Does he or she, after
rejecting Christ, have eternal life? “The wages of sin is death”
(Romans 6:23), which means that the unbeliever will be eternally separated
from God. Speaking of unbelievers, II Thessalonians 1:9 says they “shall
be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and
from the glory of His power.” So, instead of having everlasting life,
the unbeliever has everlasting death. “And these shall go away into
everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal” Matthew
25:46).
The Apostle Peter said that in the last days there will be scoffers - mockers,
making light of all that pertains to the things of God or spiritual things
(I Peter 3:3-4). There are those who have nothing to do with God or His Word.
One day, however, they will stand before God to bow the knee and to confess
with their mouths to their own destruction that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians
2:10; Romans 14:11).
If you feel the need of the Savior, believe and receive Christ into your life
today (John 1:12).
